There are many reasons for the purpose of Stars Wars: The Force Awakens. The main purpose for Star Wars is to continue the original trilogy. Fans of Star Wars haven’t received a film since the last film ‘Revenge of the Sith’ in 2005 which is over 10 years ago. the purpose of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is for JJ Abrams to give true dedicated fans a new film to look forward to.
In addition, another purpose of the new Star Wars film is the profit that the film would make. The Phantom Menace made $28 million just on the opening day and became the quickest film to gross $300million. This gives a strong reason to create a new film; IMDb said it will be the second highest grossing film of the year.
Also, the purpose could well be to make a profit from selling brand new merchandise.
In addition, the purpose of the new Star Wars film could be for JJ Abrams to make a good Star Wars film following the prequels.
The Uses and Gratifications theory is an theory that uses the approach of understanding why the audience seek out the specific media to satisfy their individual needs. In relation to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the audience for this film are interested in the science fiction genre as this is what genre the film is. In addition, the audience for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are most likely watching this film as they are fans of the previous trilogy and are already interested and fans of Star Wars. Therefore the auidences purpose for watching Star Wars is because they are fans of the previous Star Wars films and enjoy watching science-fictions films. Also, this shows how the audience use the film to satisfy their specific needs e.g. their interests in the genre and previous films.
In addition, another important purpose that Star Wars has on its audience is escapism. This is where the audience can watch The Force Awakens as a way to forget about their daily lives and 'escaping it' by watching the film.
